How to specify an essential oil correctly: Beyond the common name, a
complete essential oil specification should state: botanical name (Latin binomial),
plant part used, extraction method (steam distillation, cold press, CO₂), country of origin,

produce fundamentally different chemical profiles). For regulated components in cosmetics

What is the difference between steam distilled and cold pressed essential oils?

Steam distillation passes steam through plant material, vaporising the volatile aromatic compounds, which are then condensed and separated from the water phase. This is the standard production method for most essential oils — herbs, flowers, roots, bark, and wood. Cold pressing (expression) is used exclusively for citrus peel oils — lemon, orange, bergamot, lime, grapefruit — where mechanical pressure is applied to the peel to release the oil without heat. Cold-pressed citrus oils retain a brighter, fresher aromatic profile than steam-distilled equivalents but are more susceptible to oxidation and have shorter shelf lives.
