Haritaki (Terminalia chebula): Commercial Forms & Sourcing Guide

Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), also known as Harad, is traded as whole or cut fruit, milled fruit powder, ratio extracts, tannin-standardised and chebulinic-acid-standardised powders, liquid extracts, glycerites, PG extracts, oil-phase preparations, traditional taila and specialist CO₂ fractions. It is used in Triphala and churna, capsules, tablets, gummies, beverages, oral-care liquids and topical oils. The correct grade depends on whether the product needs the whole fruit, general concentration, a defined tannin or named-marker assay, or compatibility with a water, alcohol, glycerin or oil system.

The critical non-equivalence

A 10:1 extract is not a 40% tannins extract. The ratio describes a stated botanical-input-to-extract-output relationship; the tannin percentage is a separate analytical result. Neither specification should be used as a substitute for the other.

Ratio, total tannins and chebulinic acid: three different specifications

Extract ratio: A ratio such as 10:1 or 25:1 describes a stated relationship between botanical starting material and extract output. The supplier must disclose whether it refers to native extract or the final carrier-containing powder. It provides no measured tannin percentage.

Total tannins: This is a collective assay. Its meaning depends on the analytical method, reference standard and calculation. It should not be silently relabelled as total polyphenols or as the sum of selected HPLC markers.

Chebulinic acid: This is one named constituent. An HPLC result for chebulinic acid is more specific than total tannins, but it does not describe the full Haritaki tannin profile.

Practical buying rule

Write the specification around the result you actually need. Ask for a ratio when concentration is the commercial requirement; total tannins when a collective assay is required; and chebulinic acid when that named marker is the target.

Common Haritaki sourcing mistakes

  • Writing “10:1 Haritaki, 40% tannins” as though the ratio guarantees the assay.
  • Comparing total-tannins figures without comparing the analytical method and reference standard.
  • Calling a hydroalcoholic liquid “water soluble” without testing dilution, haze and precipitation.
  • Assuming an oil-carried product is a true molecular solution rather than a dispersion, suspension or infusion.
  • Failing to state whether the powder is whole fruit, de-seeded fruit or another fraction.
  • Choosing whole powder for a gummy or clear drink without accounting for dose, astringency, colour and particulates.

Commercial market signals

Haritaki is commonly marketed along two parallel specification systems: extract ratios and tannin standardisation. Ratio grades are broad, concentration-led preparations; tannin-standardised grades are assay-led; named-marker grades such as chebulinic acid occupy a narrower, more analytically specific segment. Carrier-specific liquids and oils are also sold, but their names are often inconsistent across suppliers. “Water soluble” and “oil soluble” should therefore be treated as claims requiring physical qualification, not as self-proving product categories.

Ask the supplier: What part of the fruit is used? What exactly does the ratio compare? Is carrier included? Which assay method and reference standard support the percentage? Is the result NLT, a range or typical? For liquid/oil grades, is the ingredient dissolved, dispersed, suspended or infused, and at what tested use level?
