Name origin: Tanshinone is derived from danshen, the Chinese name for the source plant (丹参, literally "red ginseng," referring to the root’s distinctive brick-red colour rather than any relation to true Panax ginseng), combined with the "-one" suffix denoting the quinone functional group that gives the compounds their characteristic colour and redox chemistry.
