Boswellia serrata (Indian Frankincense): Commercial Forms & Sourcing Guide
Indian Frankincense (Boswellia serrata), known in Ayurveda as Shallaki or Salai Guggul, is traded as oleo-gum resin, resin powder, ratio extracts, total-boswellic-acid and AKBA-standardised powders, liposomal and water-dispersible preparations, oil-phase extracts and specialist CO₂ fractions. It is used across nutraceutical capsules and tablets, traditional resin preparations, tinctures, softgels, topical balms, massage oils and personal-care formulations. The correct grade depends on both the analytical target—broad extract, total boswellic acids or named AKBA—and the physical system into which it must be incorporated.
The critical non-equivalence
“85% total boswellic acids” and “30% AKBA” are not stronger and weaker versions of the same specification. Total boswellic acids is a sum; AKBA is one named acid within the broader Boswellia profile. Compare them on the axis the product actually claims.

Supercritical CO₂ Boswellia extract
What it is: A CO₂-derived lipophilic fraction that can recover volatile and resinous constituents. Composition depends strongly on pressure, temperature and any modifier used.
Best suited to: Oil-phase products, aromatic/resin fractions and specialist extract development.
Commercial advantage: Low-temperature fractionation with direct relevance to lipophilic Boswellia constituents.
Verify: Process conditions, co-solvent, volatile versus boswellic-acid profile, extraction yield, residual modifier and batch assay.
Total boswellic acids and AKBA: choose the correct assay axis
Total boswellic acids: This is a collective specification. The number is meaningful only when the supplier defines which boswellic acids are quantified, the analytical method, reference standards and calculation basis. A larger total does not tell you the amount of AKBA unless AKBA is measured and reported separately.
AKBA: 3-acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid is one named boswellic acid. An AKBA-standardised extract is selected when that specific marker is the commercial target. It may also carry a total-BA profile, but the two figures should remain separate.
Ratio extract: A 10:1 or 25:1 ratio indicates a stated concentration relationship, not a boswellic-acids assay. The supplier must disclose the ratio basis, native-extract content and carrier.
Practical buying rule
Do not rank 85% total BA, 30% AKBA and 25:1 extract on a single “strength” ladder. They describe different attributes. Select the specification that matches the intended claim and then qualify the physical form for the finished product.
Common Boswellia sourcing mistakes
- Assuming a high total-boswellic-acids percentage guarantees high AKBA.
- Comparing total-BA results from suppliers without checking which acids and methods are included.
- Treating a 10:1 or 25:1 extract ratio as evidence of boswellic-acid content.
- Buying a high-assay dry extract for a beverage and discovering that it will not disperse or remain stable.
- Calling a carrier-based product “liposomal” without confirming the phospholipid system, Boswellia loading and physical characterisation.
- Assuming “oil soluble” means a true solution rather than a suspension or dispersion.
- Ignoring resin identity and raw-material quality when buying minimally processed Boswellia.
Commercial market signals
Boswellia supplements are commonly differentiated through total-boswellic-acids percentages, AKBA percentages and branded delivery systems. These are separate commercial lanes. Total-BA grades compete on collective assay; AKBA grades compete on a named marker; water-dispersible, liposomal and self-emulsifying grades compete on delivery-system performance. The strongest percentage is not automatically the most suitable or the most comparable product.
What to specify in your Boswellia RFQ
Copyable purchasing specification
Boswellia serrata oleo-gum-resin dry extract, standardised to not less than [X% total boswellic acids, defined as the stated sum of named boswellic acids by the declared HPLC method] and/or [X% AKBA by HPLC]. Botanical source, extraction solvent, native-extract content, carrier and residual-solvent limits to be declared. Per-lot CoA to include identity, assay chromatogram or marker results, moisture, heavy metals and microbiological limits. For water- or oil-compatible grades, declare the delivery system and demonstrate physical performance at the intended use level.
Ask the supplier: Which boswellic acids are included in “total”? Is AKBA reported separately? What method and reference standards are used? Is the percentage NLT or typical? What is the native-extract content? For liposomal, water-compatible or oil-compatible grades, what exactly is the carrier system and is the extract dissolved, dispersed or suspended?
