Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is traded as whole or milled rhizome, full-spectrum and curcuminoid-standardised extracts, high-purity curcuminoids, tetrahydrocurcumin, liposomal and water-dispersible systems, oleoresin, essential oil, oil-phase preparations and specialist CO₂ fractions. It is used in traditional powders and golden-milk blends, capsules, tablets, gummies, beverages, softgels, foods, colour systems and cosmetics. The correct grade depends on the job required—whole-botanical identity, a curcuminoid or named-compound assay, pigment, flavour, aroma, or compatibility with a water or oil phase.
The critical non-equivalence
Turmeric powder, “curcumin 95%,” total curcuminoids 95–98%, tetrahydrocurcumin, oleoresin and essential oil are not interchangeable strength grades. They are different chemical fractions designed for different commercial jobs.

Whole or cut turmeric rhizome
What it is: Cleaned, cured and dried Curcuma longa rhizome supplied as fingers, bulbs, pieces or slices before final milling or extraction.
Best suited to: In-house milling, spice manufacture, decoction, traditional processing and buyers who need control over raw-material identity.
Commercial advantage: Preserves the recognisable rhizome and gives the buyer control over particle size and downstream processing.
Verify: Botanical identity, variety, rhizome part, curing method, moisture, foreign matter, pesticide status, microbiological limits, colour strength and curcuminoid content where relevant.
Milled turmeric rhizome powder
What it is: Dried turmeric rhizome milled to a stated mesh. It contains the natural starch, fibre, curcuminoids and volatile-oil fraction rather than a concentrated curcuminoid isolate.
Best suited to: Culinary products, golden-milk blends, traditional powders, capsules and opaque foods or drinks.
Commercial advantage: Delivers turmeric’s whole-rhizome identity, characteristic colour and flavour in one ingredient.
Verify: Variety, curcuminoid level, volatile-oil content where important, mesh, moisture, starch/adulteration screen, lead and other heavy metals, microbiological limits and organic certification for the exact grade.

Full-spectrum or ratio turmeric extract
What it is: A concentrated dry turmeric extract retaining a broader soluble profile than a highly purified curcuminoid ingredient. It may be sold by extract ratio, extract solids or a modest curcuminoid standardisation.
Best suited to: General botanical capsules, tablets and multi-ingredient formulas where a highly purified 95% curcuminoid claim is not required.
Commercial advantage: Provides concentration while preserving a wider extract profile and typically lowers inclusion weight compared with rhizome powder.
Verify: Starting material, extraction solvent, ratio basis, native-extract content, carrier, residual solvents, curcuminoid assay or fingerprint and volatile-oil retention where claimed.
Turmeric extract standardised to 10% curcuminoids
What it is: A lower-standardised dry extract that sits between whole-rhizome powder and high-purity curcuminoid concentrates.
Best suited to: Broad botanical formulations needing a defined but moderate curcuminoid level.
Commercial advantage: Offers an assayed specification while retaining more non-curcuminoid extract material than a 95% grade.
Verify: Whether the 10% represents total curcuminoids or curcumin alone, HPLC or other validated method, carrier, extraction solvent and per-lot profile.
High-curcuminoid extract — commonly around 95%
What it is: A concentrated turmeric extract composed predominantly of the curcuminoid mixture: curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin. Commercial language sometimes shortens this to “curcumin 95%,” even when the assay is total curcuminoids.
Best suited to: High-potency capsules, tablets, premixes and formulas carrying a defined curcuminoid specification.
Commercial advantage: Delivers a high marker concentration with low botanical mass.
Verify: Whether the assay is curcumin alone or total curcuminoids; individual curcuminoid profile, HPLC method, reference standards, residual solvents, crystal form, carrier and synthetic-adulteration controls.
High-purity curcuminoids — 98% listed grade
What it is: A further purified curcuminoid ingredient with very high total marker content. It should not automatically be described as pure curcumin unless the individual curcumin percentage supports that description.
Best suited to: Isolate-led formulations, analytical or research applications and products requiring minimal non-curcuminoid material.
Commercial advantage: Provides a tightly concentrated curcuminoid fraction.
Verify: Total curcuminoids versus individual curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin percentages; HPLC chromatogram, residual solvents, identity and synthetic-curcumin screening.
Tetrahydrocurcumin-standardised ingredient
What it is: A hydrogenated curcumin derivative and major reduced metabolite with much less yellow colour than curcumin. It is a distinct compound, not a colourless grade of ordinary turmeric powder.
Best suited to: Colour-sensitive cosmetics, specialised nutraceuticals and formulas intentionally targeting tetrahydrocurcumin.
Commercial advantage: Provides a named, pale-to-colourless curcumin derivative where turmeric’s yellow colour is undesirable.
Verify: Tetrahydrocurcumin assay, HPLC identity, residual curcumin/curcuminoids, colour specification, solvent residues and whether the ingredient is botanical-derived or produced through a defined conversion route.
Liposomal curcumin powder
What it is: A curcumin or curcuminoid extract incorporated into a phospholipid-based or related carrier system and converted to a powder. The percentage may refer to curcumin loading, total curcuminoids or total turmeric extract, so the basis must be explicit.
Best suited to: Capsules, sachets, gummies and formulas using a delivery-system positioning.
Commercial advantage: Improves dispersibility and changes delivery characteristics compared with an unformulated crystalline extract.
Verify: Curcuminoid loading, phospholipid and carrier composition, particle characterisation, moisture, oxidation stability, assay after formulation and whether any bioavailability data apply to the exact grade.
Water-dispersible or solubilised curcuminoid grade
What it is: A formulated curcuminoid system using emulsifiers, cyclodextrins, micelles, colloids or other carriers to overcome curcumin’s extremely poor native water solubility. “Water soluble” may describe the finished delivery system rather than curcumin itself.
Best suited to: Beverages, shots, syrups, oral liquids, gummies and water-phase formulas.
Commercial advantage: Allows curcuminoids to disperse or remain colloidally carried in aqueous systems.
Verify: Delivery system, curcuminoid loading, clarity or acceptable opacity, pH range, dilution behaviour, sedimentation, heat stability, preservative compatibility and assay through shelf life.
Hydroalcoholic turmeric liquid extract
What it is: A turmeric extract produced or carried in an ethanol-and-water system. Its profile is broader than a water-only decoction and may include curcuminoids and other moderately lipophilic constituents depending on alcohol concentration.
Best suited to: Drops, tinctures, concentrates and formulas where ethanol is acceptable.
Commercial advantage: Ready liquid handling with solvent selectivity adjustable through the ethanol-to-water ratio.
Verify: Alcohol percentage, botanical-to-extract ratio, dry solids, curcuminoid profile, pH, dilution precipitation, preservation and residual-solvent requirements.
Turmeric oleoresin
What it is: A concentrated solvent-derived spice extract containing curcuminoid pigments, pungent/aromatic resinous constituents and part of the volatile-oil fraction. It is not the same as purified curcuminoids or turmeric essential oil.
Best suited to: Food colour and flavour systems, seasonings, sauces, processed foods and oil-compatible applications.
Commercial advantage: Combines strong colour with a broader spice flavour profile in a concentrated, low-bulk ingredient.
Verify: Curcuminoid or colour value, volatile oil, solvent residues, carrier or emulsifier, viscosity, dispersibility, permitted food-use status and batch sensory profile.
Turmeric essential oil
What it is: The volatile fraction obtained principally by steam distillation of turmeric rhizome. It contains turmerones and other aroma compounds but only negligible curcuminoids because curcuminoids are non-volatile.
Best suited to: Flavour, fragrance, aromatics, personal care and formulas targeting the volatile fraction rather than yellow pigment.
Commercial advantage: Delivers turmeric aroma and volatile constituents without the heavy curcuminoid colour load.
Verify: Botanical origin, plant part, distillation method, GC profile, ar-turmerone and related markers, refractive index, specific gravity, oxidation, adulteration and allergen/regulatory status.
Oil-soluble curcuminoid or carrier-oil preparation
What it is: A curcuminoid concentrate molecularly solubilised, dispersed or suspended in a stated oil or oil-compatible solvent system. It should be described by its actual physical state.
Best suited to: Softgels, oil serums, balms, emulsions and lipid-based functional products.
Commercial advantage: Places curcuminoids directly into an oil phase and can simplify softgel or topical manufacture.
Verify: Carrier oil, curcuminoid loading, solution versus suspension, sedimentation, low-temperature precipitation, oxidation stability, fill viscosity and compatibility with the finished system.
Supercritical CO₂ turmeric extract
What it is: A lipophilic fraction obtained with supercritical carbon dioxide, often rich in volatile oils and less-polar constituents. Neat CO₂ is not the standard route for a high-curcuminoid powder because curcuminoids are less readily recovered without process modification.
Best suited to: Oil-phase products, aromatic fractions, specialist flavour extracts and process-development applications.
Commercial advantage: Low-temperature extraction with tunable selectivity for turmeric’s volatile and lipophilic fractions.
Verify: Pressure, temperature, co-solvent or modifier, volatile-oil and curcuminoid profile, extraction yield, residual modifier and physical form.
Curcumin, curcuminoids and turmeric: use the correct assay language
Turmeric powder: The whole milled rhizome contains curcumin together with demethoxycurcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin, starch, fibre, protein and volatile oil. Its curcuminoid level varies by variety and crop.
Total curcuminoids: This usually means the sum of curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin. A commercial “95% curcumin” product may actually be a 95% total-curcuminoid mixture unless the specification reports curcumin individually.
Curcumin: One named curcuminoid. A true curcumin assay should be reported separately from total curcuminoids.
Tetrahydrocurcumin: A reduced curcumin derivative with different colour and chemistry. It should never be presented as simply a colourless turmeric extract.
Practical buying rule
Write the RFQ using the exact target: whole turmeric powder, total curcuminoids, individual curcumin, tetrahydrocurcumin, volatile oil or oleoresin. Do not let a supplier substitute one axis for another.
Common Turmeric sourcing mistakes
- Calling every 95% curcuminoid mixture “95% pure curcumin.”
- Comparing rhizome powder and concentrated extract as though they differ only in potency.
- Choosing a high-assay crystalline extract for a beverage without a proven dispersing system.
- Buying essential oil when the formulation actually needs curcuminoid colour or assay.
- Buying oleoresin when a low-flavour purified curcuminoid concentrate is required.
- Treating liposomal loading percentage as directly comparable with the assay of an unformulated extract.
- Ignoring synthetic-curcumin adulteration controls in high-purity material.
- Assuming Lakadong or another named variety automatically guarantees a fixed curcumin percentage without a batch result.
Commercial market signals
Turmeric is one of the clearest examples of a botanical divided into ingredient-role markets. Powder competes on origin, variety, colour, flavour and whole-rhizome identity. High-curcuminoid extracts compete on assay and purity. Water-dispersible, micellar, phospholipid and liposomal grades compete on delivery-system performance. Oleoresin and essential oil compete in food, flavour and aromatic applications. These categories should be benchmarked separately rather than placed on one price-per-kilogram ladder.
What to specify in your Turmeric RFQ
Copyable purchasing specification
Curcuma longa rhizome [powder / dry extract / liquid or oil preparation], manufactured from authenticated rhizome. For a curcuminoid extract: not less than [X% total curcuminoids] by the declared HPLC method, with individual curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin profile reported where required. For a named-curcumin or tetrahydrocurcumin grade, report that compound separately. Extraction solvent, native-extract content, carrier, residual solvents and synthetic-adulteration controls to be declared. Per-lot CoA to include identity, assay, moisture, heavy metals and microbiological limits.
Ask the supplier: Does the percentage mean curcumin alone or total curcuminoids? What are the three individual curcuminoid values? Which HPLC method and reference standards are used? Is the material a crystalline extract, oleoresin, dispersion, liposome or oil solution? What carriers are present? For powder, which variety and batch curcuminoid result apply?
