Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum): Commercial Forms & Sourcing Guide
Reishi (Ganoderma spp.) is traded as dried fruiting-body slices and powder, hot-water and dual extracts, beta-glucan-, polysaccharide- and triterpene-standardised powders, liquid extracts, mycelial material, wall-broken spores, spore oil and specialist CO₂ fractions. It is used in decoctions, capsules, tablets, sachets, coffee and cocoa blends, tinctures, softgels and specialist mushroom formulations. The correct ingredient depends on three linked choices: fruiting body, mycelium or spores; water, alcohol or dual extraction; and whether the specification targets beta-glucans, total polysaccharides or triterpenes.
The critical non-equivalence
“50% polysaccharides,” “30% beta-glucans” and “10% triterpenes” are not competing strength grades. They measure different constituent pools. Fruiting body, mycelium and spores also cannot be treated as interchangeable Reishi raw materials.

Dehydrated Reishi fruiting-body slices
What it is: Dried, sliced fruiting body supplied as a recognisable raw material for decoction, tea, milling or in-house extraction.
Best suited to: Traditional hot-water preparation, mushroom teas, R&D extraction and buyers wanting direct fruiting-body identity.
Commercial advantage: Maximum transparency about the raw material and direct control over downstream processing.
Verify: Species identity, fruiting-body confirmation, cultivation substrate, slice thickness, moisture, foreign matter, pesticide status, heavy metals, microbiological limits and storage.
Fruiting-body powder
What it is: Dried Reishi fruiting body milled without an extraction step. It contains the intact fungal cell-wall matrix, chitin, glucans, proteins and other constituents at their natural concentrations.
Best suited to: Whole-mushroom capsules, traditional powders, food blends and buyers specifically seeking non-extracted fruiting body.
Commercial advantage: Preserves the complete fruiting-body matrix and avoids extract carriers.
Verify: Fruiting body versus mycelium, substrate contamination, particle size, beta-glucans, alpha-glucans or starch, moisture, microbial quality and heavy metals.
Hot-water fruiting-body extract
What it is: A concentrated extract made with hot water to recover water-soluble polysaccharides, glucans and other polar constituents, then filtered and usually spray dried.
Best suited to: Capsules, sachets, coffee/latte blends, powders and formulas prioritising the water-extracted mushroom fraction.
Commercial advantage: Concentrates the soluble mushroom fraction and usually disperses more readily than raw fruiting-body powder.
Verify: Extraction ratio, temperature and time, native-extract content, carrier, beta-glucans, alpha-glucans or starch, total polysaccharides, solubility and microbial quality.
Dual Reishi extract
What it is: A sequential or combined water-and-ethanol extract intended to recover both water-soluble glucans and less-polar triterpenoids. The term “dual extract” is process language and does not itself prove either fraction.
Best suited to: Capsules, tinctures and products intentionally combining polysaccharide and triterpene specifications.
Commercial advantage: Brings two chemically different Ganoderma fractions into one commercial ingredient.
Verify: Extraction sequence, solvent strengths, native-extract content, beta-glucans, total polysaccharides, triterpenes or ganoderic-acid profile, carrier and residual ethanol.
Beta-glucan-standardised fruiting-body extract
What it is: A Reishi extract assayed specifically for beta-linked glucans rather than only for crude total polysaccharides. Beta-glucans are one subset of the wider polysaccharide pool.
Best suited to: Quality-led capsules, sachets and products using a defined fungal beta-glucan specification.
Commercial advantage: Provides a more specific fungal-polysaccharide metric than an undifferentiated total-polysaccharides number.
Verify: Assay method, beta- versus alpha-glucans, starch correction, dried-basis calculation, fruiting-body identity, carrier and per-lot result.
Polysaccharide-standardised extract — 30% or 50%
What it is: A Reishi extract sold against a collective carbohydrate assay. Depending on method, “polysaccharides” can include several fungal carbohydrates and may also respond to added starches or maltodextrin unless the test controls for them.
Best suited to: Products whose commercial specification is explicitly total polysaccharides rather than beta-glucans.
Commercial advantage: Provides a broad, high-percentage collective assay that is widely recognised in the mushroom ingredient market.
Verify: Analytical method, calibration standard, alpha-amylase or starch correction, beta-glucans reported separately, carrier composition, fruiting-body identity and dry-basis calculation.
Triterpene-standardised Reishi extract — 4% or 10%
What it is: A less-polar Reishi fraction standardised to total triterpenes or a defined group of triterpenoids. Ganoderma triterpenes include many structurally related compounds, so the collective assay must be described precisely.
Best suited to: Bitter, triterpene-led capsules, dual-extract products and formulas intentionally targeting the non-polysaccharide fraction.
Commercial advantage: Separates the triterpene specification from beta-glucans and total polysaccharides.
Verify: Colorimetric versus chromatographic method, reference standard, total triterpenes versus named ganoderic acids, extraction solvent, carrier, bitterness and residual solvents.
Full-spectrum fruiting-body extract
What it is: A Reishi fruiting-body extract sold without making one high-percentage beta-glucan, polysaccharide or triterpene claim the sole product identity.
Best suited to: General mushroom formulas, coffee blends, capsules and buyers seeking a broader extract profile.
Commercial advantage: Balances extract concentration with a less narrowly purified constituent profile.
Verify: Fruiting-body identity, extraction solvent, ratio, carrier, beta- and alpha-glucans, total polysaccharides, triterpene fingerprint and microbiological quality.
Water-compatible Reishi liquid extract
What it is: A water-carried fruiting-body extract intended for drops, syrups or other aqueous systems. It may be a concentrated decoction, clarified extract or formulated liquid and should be described by its actual process.
Best suited to: Alcohol-free drops, syrups, oral liquids and water-based products.
Commercial advantage: Ready liquid handling and direct compatibility with aqueous manufacture.
Verify: Extraction process, solids, preservative system, pH, clarity or expected haze, sedimentation, beta-glucans/polysaccharides, carrier and microbial stability.
Hydroalcoholic Reishi tincture
What it is: A liquid extract produced or carried in ethanol and water. The ethanol proportion broadens extraction beyond a water-only decoction but does not automatically make it equivalent to a sequential dual extract.
Best suited to: Drops, tinctures and liquid concentrates where ethanol is acceptable.
Commercial advantage: Convenient liquid delivery and access to a broader polarity range than water alone.
Verify: Alcohol percentage, botanical-to-extract ratio, fruiting-body identity, solids, extraction sequence, beta-glucans, triterpene profile, dilution precipitation and preservation.
Reishi mycelium or myceliated biomass
What it is: Cultured fungal mycelium supplied alone or together with residual grain/substrate. It is a different raw material from the fruiting body and should never be silently substituted for it.
Best suited to: Products intentionally formulated around mycelial biomass or fermentation-derived material.
Commercial advantage: Can offer controlled fermentation and a distinct metabolite profile when correctly identified.
Verify: Pure mycelium versus myceliated grain, residual substrate, alpha-glucans/starch, beta-glucans, species identity, fermentation medium, carrier and whether the product claim refers to fruiting body.

Wall-broken Reishi spore powder
What it is: Spores collected from mature fruiting bodies and mechanically or otherwise processed to break the resistant spore wall. Spores are a separate Ganoderma raw material, not a more concentrated fruiting-body extract.
Best suited to: Specialist spore-led capsules and formulas intentionally using Ganoderma spores.
Commercial advantage: Distinct raw-material identity with its own lipid and triterpenoid profile.
Verify: Species, spore purity, wall-breaking method and rate, oxidation, microbial quality, heavy metals, total triterpenes, oil content and absence of fruiting-body or substrate substitution.
Reishi spore oil
What it is: A lipophilic oil fraction obtained from wall-broken or extracted Reishi spores, commonly by supercritical CO₂ or another oil-extraction route.
Best suited to: Softgels and specialist lipid-phase Ganoderma products.
Commercial advantage: Concentrates the spore lipid fraction in a directly oil-compatible form.
Verify: Spore identity, extraction method, CO₂ process conditions or solvent residues, fatty-acid profile, triterpenoids, oxidation markers, carrier oil and encapsulation stability.
Supercritical CO₂ Reishi extract
What it is: A lipophilic Ganoderma fraction produced with supercritical carbon dioxide, most technically relevant to spores or triterpene-rich material rather than to beta-glucan recovery.
Best suited to: Spore oil, triterpene-rich softgels and specialist oil-phase extracts.
Commercial advantage: Low-temperature extraction of lipophilic constituents without creating a water-extracted glucan product.
Verify: Raw material used, pressure, temperature, modifier, extraction yield, triterpene or sterol profile, residual modifier, oxidation and physical form.
Beta-glucans, polysaccharides and triterpenes: three different assay axes
Beta-glucans: These are beta-linked glucose polymers within the wider fungal polysaccharide matrix. A beta-glucan assay is more specific than a generic total-polysaccharides test, but the method still matters.
Total polysaccharides: This is a collective carbohydrate measurement. It can include beta-glucans, alpha-glucans and other carbohydrates; poorly controlled methods may also respond to starch or maltodextrin.
Triterpenes: Ganoderma contains a structurally diverse triterpenoid fraction. A total-triterpenes result may be colorimetric or chromatographic and should not be interpreted as beta-glucan quality.
Practical buying rule
Choose the assay that matches the product claim, then verify the source material and extraction route. For a fruiting-body beta-glucan product, ask for fruiting-body identity, beta- and alpha-glucans and carrier disclosure. For a triterpene product, ask which triterpenes or ganoderic acids are actually measured.
Common Reishi sourcing mistakes
- Accepting “polysaccharides 50%” as though it automatically means 50% beta-glucans.
- Ignoring alpha-glucans or starch when evaluating myceliated grain and carrier-added extracts.
- Calling mycelium, spores and fruiting body interchangeable sources of Reishi.
- Buying a hot-water extract for a triterpene-led specification without checking the extraction route.
- Using the term “dual extract” without requiring both glucan and triterpene results.
- Assuming a water-compatible liquid is optically clear or shelf-stable at the intended use level.
- Comparing colorimetric total-triterpene percentages with named ganoderic-acid HPLC results as though they were identical.
- Failing to disclose maltodextrin or other spray-drying carriers.
Commercial market signals
Reishi is commercially segmented first by source—fruiting body, mycelium or spores—and then by assay. Fruiting-body hot-water extracts compete on beta-glucans and polysaccharides; dual and alcohol extracts compete on broader triterpene coverage; spore products compete on wall-breaking, oil and triterpenoid specifications. The market uses “polysaccharides” widely because it produces large headline numbers, but quality-conscious buyers increasingly ask for beta- and alpha-glucans plus source-material disclosure.

Copyable purchasing specification
Ganoderma [species] [fruiting body / mycelium / wall-broken spores] [powder / hot-water extract / dual extract / liquid extract], with raw-material source and cultivation substrate declared. For a glucan-led extract: not less than [X% beta-glucans] by the stated validated method, with alpha-glucans/starch reported separately and carrier disclosed. For a polysaccharide grade: state the total-polysaccharides method and starch correction. For a triterpene grade: report [X% total triterpenes and/or named ganoderic acids] by the declared method. Ask the supplier: Fruiting body, mycelium or spores? Is mycelium grown on grain, and how much substrate remains? What are beta- and alpha-glucans? Does the polysaccharide method exclude starch and maltodextrin? Is the extract hot-water, alcohol or dual? Which triterpenes or ganoderic acids are measured, and by which method?
