Name origin: From Astragalus (the plant genus) + -oside (glycoside). Astragalosides are a family of cycloartane-type triterpene saponins, with astragaloside IV being the most pharmacologically studied member and the direct precursor to cycloastragenol (the aglycone). Traditional use: Astragalus (Huang Qi in TCM, literally “yellow leader”) is one of the most important tonic herbs in Chinese medicine — prescribed for Qi deficiency, immune weakness, fatigue, and as a general anti-ageing adaptogen for over 2,000 years. It is frequently used in TCM compound prescriptions as a primary tonic herb. Research trajectory: Astragalosides have attracted major research attention for their role in telomerase activation — astragaloside IV (and its aglycone cycloastragenol) activates telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT), extending telomere length in human cells. This mechanism has made astragalosides the subject of intense longevity research. Immunomodulatory and cardioprotective activities are well-characterised. Commercial source: Astragalus Extract Powder (polysaccharides 70%) and Cycloastragenol 98% from Herbuno. See sourcing options below.
Evidence for Astragaloside Applications
Telomerase activation and anti-ageing: Astragaloside IV and cycloastragenol (its aglycone) activate telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) in human T-cells, leading to measurable telomere lengthening over months of treatment. TA-65 (a proprietary cycloastragenol preparation) has human pilot data showing telomere elongation and improvements in immune cell populations in a 1-year open-label study. This is the most scientifically distinguished mechanism associated with any botanical compound for healthy ageing. Claim strength: Moderate (mechanistically compelling; limited controlled RCT data).
Immunomodulatory: Astragalosides stimulate macrophage activity, NK cell cytotoxicity, T-lymphocyte proliferation, and interferon production. Multiple human studies with astragalus root extract (not isolated astragalosides) show improvements in immune function in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy (reduced immunosuppression). Claim strength: Moderate.
Cardioprotective: Astragaloside IV reduces ischaemia-reperfusion injury, inhibits cardiac fibrosis (TGF-β1/Smad pathway), and improves cardiac function in animal models of heart failure. Chinese clinical context provides limited human data for astragalus-containing compound prescriptions in cardiovascular disease. Claim strength: Moderate (animal data; Chinese clinical compound context).

Dosage & Formulator Specification
TA-65 open-label study: 5–10 mg cycloastragenol equivalent per day (from proprietary astragaloside IV preparation). For astragaloside-containing astragalus root extract: 500–1,500 mg/day standardised extract is the traditional and clinical range, delivering small amounts of astragalosides (astragaloside IV typically 0.01–0.1% of root). Herbuno’s Polysaccharides 70% Huang Qi extract delivers the polysaccharide fraction (the primary immunomodulatory fraction) alongside trace astragalosides. For significant astragaloside IV and cycloastragenol activity, specify Cycloastragenol 98% directly from Herbuno.
Frequently Asked Questions — Astragalosides
What is the relationship between astragalosides and cycloastragenol?
Astragaloside IV is a tetrasaccharide glycoside — cycloastragenol (the aglycone) with two glucosyl and two xylosyl groups attached. Cycloastragenol is released from astragaloside IV by hydrolysis of the sugar chains (enzymatic or acid). Cycloastragenol is the direct telomerase-activating compound; astragaloside IV is the natural form and a prodrug source of cycloastragenol. Cycloastragenol 98% allows direct, concentrated delivery at lower required dose; astragaloside-containing extracts deliver cycloastragenol via in vivo hydrolysis at much lower efficiency.
Is telomere lengthening from astragalosides proven in humans?
The TA-65 open-label study (Harley et al. 2011) showed statistically significant telomere lengthening in immune cells (CD8+CD28- T-cells) after 12 months in 114 participants. This is real human data for telomere lengthening from a botanical compound — unique in the supplement literature. However, it was an open-label study (no control group), so placebo effects cannot be excluded. What the study cannot prove is whether telomere lengthening at this magnitude translates to clinically meaningful health outcomes — that question requires long-term randomised studies not yet completed.
Is Huang Qi the same as astragalus?
Yes. Huang Qi is the traditional Chinese name for Astragalus membranaceus (and the closely related A. mongholicus). The same plant root is sold under both names in different markets. Huang Qi is the TCM name emphasising its use in Chinese medicine tonic prescriptions; astragalus is the Western/supplement market name. Both names refer to the same botanical raw material.
Can astragalosides be combined with NMN or resveratrol for a longevity formulation?
Yes — rationally synergistic. Cycloastragenol/astragaloside IV addresses telomere length (telomerase activation pathway). NMN addresses NAD+ decline (sirtuin pathway). Resveratrol addresses SIRT1 activation (overlapping with NMN but also independent longevity signalling). These three compounds target different but interconnected hallmarks of ageing (telomere shortening, NAD+ decline, sirtuin activity). Co-formulation addresses multiple ageing mechanisms, which is a scientifically coherent longevity supplement positioning.
